On this month’s cover we have the very lovely and very talented Edie Adams.
Edie Adams (born Edith Elizabeth Enke) was born in Kingston, Pennsylvania on April 16, 1927. She died October 15, 2008.
She was the youngest child and only daughter of Sheldon Alonzo Enke and his wife, Ada Dorothy (née Adams). She had an older brother, Sheldon Adams Enke.
Her mother taught Edie how to sing and play piano and her grandmother, who was a seamstress, taught her how to sew.
Adam’s made her own clothing starting in 6th grade. Later Adams would start her own designer line of clothing, called Bonham, Inc.
She earned a vocal degree from Juilliard and then graduated from Columbia School of Drama. She studied at the Actors Studio in New York and at the Traphagen School of Fashion.
Adams was an extremely versatile American comedienne, actress, singer and businesswoman. She was nominated for an Emmy Award and won a Tony Award.
She was the wife and frequent television partner of her husband Ernie Kovacs until his 1962 death in a car accident.
After Kovacs’ death, Adams was married two more times.
In 1964, she married photographer Martin Mills and then in 1972, she married trumpet player Pete Candoli.
In addition to raising her stepdaughters Bette and Kippie from her marriage to Kovacs, Adams gave birth to daughter Mia Susan Kovacs (killed in an automobile accident in 1982), and son Joshua Mills.
Her son now owns his mother’s substantial entertainment files and sells the rights to through Ediad Productions.
In 1950, she won the “Miss U.S. Television” beauty contest (see the original show below this paragraph). This eventually led to a regular spot on the Ernie Kovacs show and her marriage to him.
In one of his last interviews, Kovacs looked back on those early days, saying, “I wish I could say I was the big shot that hired her, but it was my show in name only—the producer had all the say. Later on I did have something to say and I said it, ‘Let’s get married.'”
The Kovacs and Adams legacy…
After her husband’s death in 1962, Adams learned her husband’s work was being thrown out by the studios. So she took upon herself to use the proceeds of his insurance policy, as well as, her own earnings to buy up the rights to as much of the Kovac’s production footage as possible.
Edie Adams died in Los Angeles, California, on October 15, 2008, at the age of 81, from cancer and pneumonia.
She was interred in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Hollywood Hills alongside her first husband Ernie, between her daughter, Mia, and her stepdaughter, Kippie.
