Marilyn Monroe was born Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1, 1926. She died August 4, 1962.
Monroe was an American actress, model, and singer. She’s best known for playing comedic “blonde bombshell” characters and became one of the most popular sex symbols of the 1950s and early 1960s.
Monroe’s popularity was emblematic of the era’s changing attitudes towards sexuality.
This might be surprising, but Marilyn was a top-billed actress for only a decade. Her films grossed $200 million (equivalent to $2 billion in 2019) by the time of her death in 1962.
In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked Monroe sixth on its list of the greatest female screen legends from the Golden Age of Hollywood.

In The Beginning….
Born and raised in Los Angeles, Monroe spent most of her childhood in foster homes and an orphanage, then married at the age of 16.
She was working in a factory as part of the war effort during World War II when she met a photographer from the First Motion Picture Unit and soon began a successful pin-up modeling career.
This led to short-lived film contracts with both 20th Century Fox and Columbia Pictures until she started to score big time.
In late 1950, she signed a contract with Fox and over the next two years she had large parts in:

Marilyn faced a scandal when it was revealed she posed for nude photos before she became a star.
The story didn’t slow her down. In fact, it gave her momentum which continued until she became one of the highest-paid actresses of the time.
By 1953, Monroe was one of the hottest stars in Hollywood. Below are some of the movies she shot during the most productive years of her career. These are now considered classics.

Marilyn & Playboy
As much success as Monroe had, the studios owned the movies stars back then. The actors had little input on the type of productions they were a part of.
As a result, Monroe founded her own film production company in 1954. She dedicated 1955 to building up the company while studying method acting under Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio.
In 1953, Hugh Hefner’s Playboy empire began with Marilyn Monroe. She was the very first centerfold and covergirl.
Marilyn didn’t actually pose for the magazine at all. Hef bought the nude pictures that Monroe had taken earlier in her career when she was broke and unknown. These were also the pictures that created the scandal which would later help launch her movie career.
Hugh Hefner has said many times he felt a strong connection to Marilyn although they never met while she was alive.
Hefner purchased the rights to Monroe’s nude photos from the Chicago company who owned them in the fall of 1953 for a reported $500.
As described in Playboy‘s first issue by Hef himself;
“There were actually two poses shot au naturel back in ’49, just before the gorgeous blonde got her first movie break. When they appeared as calendar art, they helped catapult her to stardom. We’ve selected the better of the two as our first Playboy Sweetheart.”
(Sweetheart of the Month was the precursor to Playmate of the Month.)
Playboy hit newsstands for the first time in December 1953 with a price tag of 50 cents. A black and white photograph of a smiling, fully dressed Monroe on the cover. It promised the reader one “FULL COLOR” nude photo of Monroe for the ‘first time in any magazine’.
Private Life…
Her marriages to retired baseball star Joe DiMaggio and to playwright Arthur Miller were highly publicized, and both ended in divorce.
Besides Marilyn’s plethora of sexual affairs with men she was known for her many liasions with women.

It’s said she slept with some very famous women such as; Joan Crawford, Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich.
Apparently, she also had ongoing love affairs with her acting coaches Paula Strasberg and Natasha Lytess.
It’s reported that Marilyn even had a hook up with a 16 year old girl!
Jane Lawrence, the teen, was the head of Marilyn’s fan club at the time. This encounter was far from being weird or creepy as many are when a powerful celebrity lures an innocent victim.
Jane was adventurous and had openly shared her lesbian encounters with Marilyn before the bombshell seduced her.

On August 4, 1962, Marilyn Monroe died at age 36 from an overdose of barbiturates at her home in Los Angeles.
Her death was ruled a probable suicide, although several ‘conspiracy theories’ have been proposed in the decades following her death.
By 1961, Marilyn’s mental instability was well known. She was haunted by depression and was under the constant care of a psychiatrist.
She became increasingly erratic in the last months of her life and lived as a virtual recluse in her Brentwood, Los Angeles, home.
After midnight on the eve of her death (August 5, 1962), her maid, Eunice Murray noticed Monroe’s bedroom light on. Murray knocked on the door to inquire about her and receive no response. So the maid decided to call Monroe’s psychiatrist, Dr. Ralph Greenson.
On arrival, Dr. Greenson gained access to Marilyn’s bedroom by breaking a window. He found Marilyn lying on the bed, dead from an apparent overdose.
The police were called sometime after. An autopsy found a fatal amount of sedatives in her system, and her death was ruled probable suicide.
There were many signs that Monroe was losing the battle with pills and alcohol in the last few years of her life.
Marilyn had always wanted a baby. After multiple miscarriages and divorces, she plunged deeper and deeper into anxiety, insomnia and depression. She began turning to prescription drugs and alcohol for relief.
James Bacon, a close friend of Marilyn‘s put it this way;
“She was drinking champagne and straight vodka and occasionally popping a pill… I said, ‘Marilyn, the combination of pills and alcohol will kill you.’ And she said, ‘It hasn’t killed me yet.’ Then she took another drink and popped another pill.”
Another of Marilyn’s actor friends and bother-in-law to John F. Kennedy was Peter Lawford.
Lawford wasn’t there when she died, but he was the last person to speak to Monroe alive. They had spoken on the phone earlier in the day. He remembers her saying at the end of their conversation, “Say goodbye to Pat [Lawford’s wife]. Say goodbye to the president. And say goodbye to yourself because you’re a nice guy.”

Words Of Warning…
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention, once again, to stock up on food. At least get some canned goods and bottled water. I’ve got my stash.
I would also like to add, there are heavy indications that the electricity and internet will be cut off at some point this winter (2020/2021).
For how long we don’t know. It will probably be intermittent. At least, at first.
Many people have predicted there will be some food shortages and power outages in the US and elsewhere. It’s already happening in some places.
Perhaps getting a solar generator is an option for you. I’ve just ordered a small portable solar USB charger for my cellphone and laptop. Hopefully it will charge the laptop too…
We live in strange times. On a soul level we all chose to be here now. It’s OUR Responsibility to Fight For Freedom. We must fight for ourselves… and for future generations.
