On this month’s cover we have the dynamic duo of the 1940s & 50s Sir Laurence Olivier & Vivien Leigh.
Vivien’s Early Life…
Vivien Leigh was born Vivian Mary Hartley, November 5, 1913, in Darjeeling, Bengal Presidency, British India to an English stockbroker and his Irish wife. Leigh died on July 8, 1967, Belgravia, London, Englanda.
Vivien Leigh was convent-educated in England and throughout Europe. Interestingly, she was inspired by her schoolmate Maureen O’Sullivan to take up acting. In fact, Leigh (then as Hartley) announced to her classmate Maureen O’Sullivan, that she “was going to be famous.” Leigh was right, though her fame came under the new moniker.
As a teen, Vivian Hartley attended schools in England, France, Italy and Germany. She became fluent in both French and Italian and went on to study acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London.
First Marriage…
She temporarily put her career on hold at age 19, when she married a lawyer named Leigh Holman in 1932 and had their daughter in 1933. However, the pull to acting was strong. It didn’t take long for her to get back into it.
To become the more glamorous ‘Vivien Leigh’ she used her then husband’s middle name Leigh, for her last name and replaced the “a” in her first name with the less commonly used “e.”
Only Child…
Her only child was Suzanne Farrington who became an actress herself. Suzanne was born, Suzanne Holman, October 12, 1933 in Marylebone, London, England. Suzanne died on March 1, 2015, Lower Zeals, Wiltshire, England.

Film & Stage
Vivien Leigh became a world famous stage and film actress who won the Academy Award for Best Actress twice. Once for her definitive performances as Scarlett O’Hara in Gone With The Wind and again as Blanche DuBois in the film version of A Streetcar Named Desire. She also played the role of DuBois on stage in London’s West End in 1949.
Leigh made both her onstage and film debuts in 1935.
She starred in the play The Bash, which wasn’t particularly successful but it allowed Leigh to make an impression on producer Sydney Carroll. Carroll soon cast Leigh in her first London play; and landed the lead in the movie Things are Looking Up (1935).
Although Leigh was initially typecast as a fickle coquette, she began to explore more dynamic roles by doing Shakespearean plays in London.
There, she met and fell in love with Laurence Olivier. They were both married at the time.
Soon after they embarked on a collaborative acting relationship that turned into a very public love affair.

The Marriage of Leigh & Sir Laurence
For nearly 20 years (1940-1960), Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier were one of Hollywood’s most charismatic power couples.
From 1936 to 1940 they were involved in a passionate and scandalous affair which began secretly and ended in a horrible mess. There was much passion and love in between. They became lovers, despite Vivien’s marriage to Holman and Laurence’s marriage to actress Jill Esmond.
It was after she starred in the play The Mask of Virtue to rave reviews, that actor Laurence Olivier congratulated her on her performance. Soon afterward they played lovers in 1937 film Fire Over England.
Their fiery relationship was so intense many considered it near insanity. In his early love letters to her, Olivier revealed an all-consuming lust for Leigh’s beauty and spark.
When they finally married, their stature as The Oliviers brought them to new heights as a famous entertainment couple.

Bipolar Nymphomaniac
It’s unfortunate, but what happens sometimes is that passionate, creative people lose control of that intense energy and it begins to distort their reality.
Vivien Leigh was branded as a nymphomaniac for many years. In reality, she fought a lifelong battle with bipolar disorder. During her lifetime it was never discussed publicly.
Her condition was believed to have been triggered by the devastation of a miscarriage in 1945. However, many believe the illness had surfaced long before this incident. Certainly before any diagnosis would be then available.
In fact, when she was a student of London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts at 18, some classmates have been quoted as saying Leigh exhibited minor symptoms of bipolar then.
Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depression, is a long-term illness which has to be managed throughout a person’s life.
Symptoms are severe and different from what might be written off as mood swings. This brain disorder often develops in the late teenage or early adult years and is not easy to spot because the symptoms often appear to be separate issues.

How The Disorder Increased
Leigh was under psychological strain trying to match Olivier’s reputation as an actor.
They were paired in a production of Twelfth Night, directed by John Gielgud. Reviews of the play paid more attention to Olivier than Leigh.
Then while playing Lady Macbeth opposite her husband in the Stratford Festival’s production of Shakespeare’s Scottish play, she mirrored her character’s descent into madness.
Leigh “was feeding her own mania into the tragedy…. She was mesmerizing,”
According to the book Vivien: The Life of Vivien Leigh by Alexander Walker…
In 1944, one year before her miscarriage, Leigh suffered her first severe case of tuberculosis and took a year off. Olivier was knighted in 1947, and Vivien became Lady Olivier.
Their marriage was filled with ups and downs from then on until they divorced in 1960.
In the video below you’ll see a few minutes of Vivien Leigh’s life. It gives you a lot of information about Leigh in a quick bit.
In the video you’ll watch Vivien Leigh use her own tragedies and suffering to craft a riveting character. These documentaries have been compiled from her personal collection of letters, scrapbooks, photographs and treasures.
They also feature exclusive interviews with Leigh’s friends and co-stars from the golden age of Hollywood.
